Cameron Highlands 2008

Went  to Cameron Highlands over the Deepavali holiday. Went there on 27th October, came back on 29th October 2008, Monday till Wednesday.

With no NGV refueling station along the way, it seemed obvious that the only choice for transport was the Altis. Even if there was refueling stations along the way, I doubt the Wira will be suitable for the long and winding road uphill. My wife and I brought along Kit Yan. As usual, Hui Yan gets left behind with granma and granpa… 🙁

We took the old route, from Tapah up. We hadn’t had lunch yet, so we stopped by Tapah for a short lunch.

The journey up was eventless. We stopped by Habu for a rest in the Boh Tea Farm. It was not the highest point, nor the most scenic of the tea farms, but it was a good resting point.

There was plenty of clouds there, the fog was quite thick. I had a tough time trying to get a good picture of the area. The only option, it seemed, was to post process it and pump up the saturation.

I climbed up the hill where the communication tower was. Mei Fen and Kit Yan stayed at the Tea Farm sipping tea.

Next we went to this Bee Farm along the way. Just to show Yan Yan what a real bee is. She always watch the “Bee Movie” without knowing what an actual bee looked like.

Arrived at Brinchang at about 4 pm. Checked into our hotel, the Rosa Pasadena and quickly put Yan Yan to bed. She will get cranky if she does not get her evening nap.

When she woke up, we went for a walk around Brinchang.

There is a lot of things to eat and buy in Brinchang, especially freshly picked tomatoes, strawberries and flowers. We tried some of the food there, and they were absolutely delicious!

For dinner, we had one of those famous charcoal steamboats. The vegetables are real fresh, although they are by no means cheap.

The next morning, we woke up to a great view out the window, sunrise over the hills of Brinchang.

We ordered breakfast set for the 2 days we were there. No, it was not included into our room rate. 🙁

We went up to Sungei Palas, to where the original Boh Tea Farm was.

This place sure brings back a lot of memories. This was where my wife and I took one of our earliest pictures together, that was BEFORE we were officially an item! And oh my, how much this place has changed!

On our way out from Sg Palas, we saw a lot more of these wonderful stretches of land filled with uniform rows of tea. We just couldn’t resist stopping for a few shots.

We went downhill, to Tanah Rata for lunch. There is this famous eatery, Fern Nyonya located at the same row with the Maybank.

The food was only okay, nothing to shout about.

We went around the town looking for a place to hang out after lunch. Saw this small garden, and immediately recognized it as another one of our place where we took pictures earlier, 7 long years ago.

Sadly, this place has deteriorated into a state of disrepair.

By the time we left Tanah Rata, Yan Yan was already nodding off in the car. So we quickly made a bee line back to the hotel and slept a while. At 5:30 pm, we were off again. We went around Brinchang first. Mei Fen said that there is a famous temple there.

We went down to Tanah Rata again for a sight-seeing trip.

The sun was gone by the time we reached SK Convent. Again, I had to post process this batch of pictures to bring back the colour.

We read from websites of a particular T-Cafe in Tanah Rata, just above Marrybrown’s. We went there for dinner.

There are local delicacies as well as English meal. Their famous English scone seems very mouth watering.

I had the chance to talk to the owner of the cafe, Teresa. She is a very nice and friendly lady. She did say that the initial stage of opening this cafe is not easy. She suffered for almost 2 years before things starts to break even. And oh, I asked what was the reason for the name “T-Cafe”. It was her name. Go figures. 😛

Time to go back to the hotel. On the way back, we stopped by Cameron Highlands Resort, by YTL. It was a grand looking place.

The next morning, we prepared for our journey downhill. The temperature was a chilling 16 degrees celcius!

We went back to Kea Farm to buy our last batches of vegetables. (Fresher mah!) After that we head home. But not before stopping by a few places of interest along the way.

The scenic downhill trip

It is worth noticing that the downhill drive was absolutely marvelous! It was a thrill to drive the 1.8 VVTI engine with the gated shift stick. On every curve I downshifted the gear to 3rd, sometimes 2nd on a more exciting bend. By wife complaint that I drove dangerously, but on the contrary, I couldn’t feel any safer riding the Altis downhill. It was comfortable, silent and dead stable. The car pointed to each and every direction that I pointed it to. It was absolute bliss! Of course, I haven’t driven a BMW before ……

Cameron Highlands has lost its coldness compared to the previous time we were here. Nevertheless, it is still better than Genting Highlands. I am worried to think what will Cameron Highlands be when Hui Yan is old enough to come here.
