KLCC trip – PetroSains

KLCC? Been there, done that. PetroSains? Now that’s somewhere I’ve never been to in my entire life! And to be honest I was really excited. I don’t have a reason to be excited, I’ve been to Pusat Sains Negara, and frankly I am bored of going to through another physics-education-for-dummies roadshow. But this time it’s with the kids, and I thought maybe I go there with a different role now, as an educator.

Happy 5th Anniversary to me!

Happy anniversary for us! We’re married for 5 glorious years! Who would have thought that 5 years after our wedding, I’d be having this great family moment with my 2 daughters! I should truly count my blessing!

We went to the nearest Pizza Hut in Jusco Equine. It was my idea, after watching the TV commercial of the fishing boat crashing into Pizza Hut, I thought I’d crash into one too. And besides, Mei Fen and I absolutely love fish. So I thought we’d give it a try.

Chinese New Year 2010

Talk about a roaring start to a Chinese New Year! It’s the year of the tiger. On the first day of Chinese New Year, my wife and I went for a joyride on a scooter in Sagil. Mei Fen was behind the wheel. The kids were with us too, Hui Yan snugged between her parents, while Kit Yan was standing on the scooter’s foot stand. There we were, enjoying a time out as a complete family.

Suddenly out of nowhere a big black dog jumped in front of us! Experience taught us not to do anything drastic, like hitting it or running away. We can never outrun it. Besides the kids were with us, and if we sped away, we risk skidding on the small and sandy road.

An eulogy to a best friend

On a still and quiet night like these, I can really sit down and pen my thoughts about a dearly missed friend. One that has been with me for more than 5 years, but is now in heaven.

She’s my dear cat. The only cat that I have ever really give my heart for in my entire life of having pets. I have had pets since my early childhood, lots of cats, a puppy, some white mice, grasshoppers (!!), fishes. But this particular cat is different. I know she is different the moment I saw her for the first time in SPCA in Jalan Ampang.

It was way back on 21 August 2004 that I collected her from SPCA. She stood out as the only kitten that responded positively when I called. She kept rubbing her body against my legs, begging me to pat her. I immediately had a chemistry with her, and I bought her, for RM200!! I was shocked actually, I thought these cats were free, since nobody wanted them anymore. Anyway it was money well spent, as I received endless love in return, as I shall see….

The SPCA told me that she is a local / mixed Persian parentage. Her furs are soft brown and of medium length. She was not really a pretty cat to be honest, and she was not really a small kitten anymore, so the cuteness factor was not really there.

The RM200 was actually inclusive of 2 vaccination shots and one neutering operation, in November 2004, when she should reach adulthood by then. I still have the receipt with me. I did the vaccinations, but not the neutering. I couldn’t bring myself to let her undergo it. It’s kinda harsh to let her miss the joy of having kids, as I shall see later, she grew to be a great mother.

Putrajaya Hot Air Balloon Fest 2010

We were there on Saturday night too to catch the fireworks, but unfortunately by the time we reached there, the fireworks was already starting! So did not take any pictures that night.

We went there again very very early in the morning, the entire family. Needless to say, the kids were excited!

Even though we were already considered early, there were already balloons flying up in the sky by the time we got there. There were some famous ones that I did not manage to take, such as the Darth Vader, the Levi’s and the Orange.

Here are some pictures taken from the fair that I liked:

Can you go up?

Can you go up any further?

This was taken on our way back. I stopped at the bridge (dare not stop long, got policemen!) and quickly grabbed a few shots.

I’ve been busy

I’m sorry blog, I’ve been really busy lately. I only have time to update something now because I have more or less settled some big stuffs. I have now finished my 9-month assignment in KL, and starting tomorrow I will go to work in Cyberjaya again. Life will need some adjustments.

I have also embarked on two major photography projects. One was a trip to Bangkok during the Chinese New Year. Another is the wedding of my ex-colleague. I have yet the time to completely process the batches of pictures. The only thing I have now is the slideshow. So there you go, to prove that I am not telling a lie, here is the video ….

Images from Canon EOS 5D

I have a confession to make. I have been bitten by the full frame (FF) bug. But that is hardly news to you huh? So what makes a full frame different from my own 40D? The most enticing reward of going FF is the amazing bokeh that you get. Some purist are against bokeh, but bokeh is a great way of producing very pleasing portraits, a very good way to isolate your subject from the background.

I had a chance to play with a Canon EOS 5D before, the original version, not the Mark II version. You might have noticed this in my previous post; the picture was taken with a 5D. The first thing I immediately notice is the built of the buttons and dials. It’s kinda hard to explain, but the sound of the shutter press is very soft, yet very solid and assuring. And the sound of the shutter flapping against the camera body exudes class and confidence. Sure, it’s not exactly fast. At only about 3 fps, it is the same as my previous 350D. A machine gun shooter will likely avoid this camera. But a 5D is designed for a different class of photographer. The slow thinking photographer, the landscape artist, or the macro freak. It will have a slight disadvantage when shooting weddings and sports.

Tiger Woohoo!

I’ll be frank, I was being a real dickhead when my wife asked me to teman her watch this movie. “Come on, it’s a Malaysian-chinese made movie, it has sure got to have some really corny lines and stupid slapsticks”. She has asked me to go watch it since last week when it has just been shown in cinemas nationwide. But I have been dragging my feet, delaying the inevitable. But being my wife, she kept nagging reminding me about it. I told her sarcastically that you don’t need to book it first, by the first week, I’m sure that nobody will wanna watch it and that we can simply walk in the cinema and buy the tickets. But reluctantly I bought the tickets online anyway. And dragged my ass to the cinema to watch it last Sunday night, expecting to be bored to tears.

Let me set my expectation first. I DO NOT want to see another “look, I can speak perfect Cantonese like the Hongkies!” movie, nor do I need to see another “look, I can speak perfect Mandarin like the Taiwanese / Chinese” movie. I think we can safely put that aside, because to be fair, modern day Malaysian Chinese movies / serials uses a lot of local Malaysian elements in their production. Just look at Iron Lady, a thoroughly engaging and sensational Malaysian serial that got me hooked to the TV set for a while. And that’s saying a lot, because I do not watch TV, other than the occasional Spongebob Squarepants cartoons.

Even then, Iron Lady looks too Korean drama-like to my liking. And the accent still sounded, well, like a Singaporean. So when I watched Tiger Woohoo, I was expecting at least a similar kind of acting and directing, if not worse. I’m glad to say that not only was I terribly wrong by a mile, I came out of the cinema highly entertained!
