I have just upgraded to Drupal 5.3!!!

Posted: 19th October 2007 by Jacky Yong in Computers, Silly me

I was so taken away at just how absurdly simple everything went! The earlier problems that I had, all gone! I just followed the simple procedures in Drupal’s website and everything just fell into place! Let me recall what I just did:
1. Change default theme back to Garland (Drupal 5.x’s default theme)

2. Backup database using phpMyAdmin.

3. Backup files in my webhost using FTP.

4. Downloaded and copied the latest version of Drupal 5.3 into a dummy folder in my website. Run update.php in that dummy website.

5. Confirmed that everything is smooth. Then copied Drupal 5.3 into my live site and run update.php. It complained that there was nothing to upgrade, since I have already upgraded using the dummy site earlier.

6. Hey, I’m done!
I can skip step 2, 3 and 4, those are not important to the whole upgrade process. They are just “insurance”, in case anything goes wrong.
Okay, time to get back all my modules and themes that I lost….. but before that, I need to sleep…. zzzzz…..

YAY, Gutsy Gibbon is here!

Posted: 18th October 2007 by Jacky Yong in Computers, Current Affairs, Silly me

Well, aren’t you excited? =D It’s like Spongebob meeting ol’ Gary for the first time, I feel all giddy and jumpy! Hehehe … I’m now downloading it. Hopefully my next post shall be about the new Ubuntu…. 😉

Ubuntu has never let its users down in terms of product deliverance. When they said 18th October, they really meant 18th October, no delays, no hotfixes, nothing. Ubuntu is as clean as you can get, unlike the other operating systems you might be using there. Ahem…

Yikes…. only 1.16 MBytes downloaded …. sigh….

Frankly I am just so fed-up with Citibank’s sub-standard offers, considering Citibank’s size and its ability to do much better than that!

I am talking about the lame offers by Citibank and its equally lame affiliate Bella. See link here, if it’s not gone yet.

    The assignment at the bar

Last month, I was one of the lucky few who was given a chance to shoot a couple of babes for the Malaysian Babe Icon Search 2007, located in Baze Club, Renaissance Hotel, KL. But let me tell you, this assignment is NOT EASY! This write up is to explain a bit of what went on inside the shoot, and also to showcase some of the pictures that failed miserably, and which I feel is just super!

There was 16 babes, and more than 20 photographers. The photographer’s background are varied, some are from PhotoMalaysia, some are from ShutterAsia, most are from PhotoKaki. Quite a number were site hoppers (I am active in both LensaMalaysia and ShutterAsia) 😛

I was fucking banned by Google Adsense!

Posted: 16th October 2007 by Jacky Yong in Computers, Silly me

It was not too long ago that I have earned my first 5 cents online using Google Adsense, and I had high praises for it. Naturally, I was very excited at the prospect of making an earning from my blog! However greed sets in, and despite the warning against clicking on the ads in your own site, I paid each one of the advertisers on my site a visit…… okay, it was a little bit more than one visit per site. Guilty as charged! =P

What a revelation! This came as quite a shock, as I thought that the open community should at least be open to the world’s most spoken language! Bummer. Fret not, it’s totally fixable.
My version of Drupal uses the MySQL 5 (I dunno the exact sub version though). To enable posts in chinese, one has to change a two tables:

    node

    node-version
Change the field Collation from Latin to utf8_general_ci. Click on the change button on the right of your phpMyAdmin page:

    phpmyadmin.JPG

Change all fields with Latin Collation and you should be on your way to using chinese characters in your posts now!
I have not tried using the search function with the chinese characters yet. There are a lot of reports that this could pose a problem. Another to do list it would have seemed…. hmmmm

    The 5C’s and the 三得

Posted: 15th October 2007 by Jacky Yong in Silly me

Ever heard of the 5C’s criteria put on men? The famous C’s are:

    – (Credit) Card
    – Car
    – Condo
    – Cash
    – Country Club (membership)

Well we do have some important criterias for them women too. I list them thus:

    入得厨房
    出得厅堂

There is however, one very important criteria that has been left out, and I think this should seriously be one of the most, if not already is the most, important criteria in this time of the century:

    上得大床

    What say you? =P

    New Ubuntu is coming soon!!

Posted: 11th October 2007 by Jacky Yong in Computers, Current Affairs

Those in the Ubuntu community should share my excitement now. Today, 11th October 2007 may not be a very auspicious date for many people, but 7 days into the future will be for the Ubuntu community. Yes, the next installment of the successful Ubuntu Operating System will be launched! Nick-named Gutsy Gibbon, it may have a cheesy name, but who cares. My wish list in the new Ubuntu:

    – PLEASE! Fix my wireless! All your suggestions shit works! >:(
    – ACPI force still does not fucking shuts down my old laptop properly! >:(

Other than that I have no hesitation using this new Ubuntu. Let’s just see how well it performs now.

I have acquired the top of the range lens (currently) for the Canon’s cropped body despite every cell with a sense of financial intelligence in my body protesting against it. It’s a bloody expensive lens, and I’m still paying it with my blood and sweat. It’s a really painful purchase which still resonance till now. Read the rest of this entry »
