I didn’t know the letter J would eventually made me spend the better half of my Deepavali holiday fussing over it. Yeah, for those who has been following my website from its first inception until now, you would have noticed quite a number of theme change. The first theme that I chose Ubiquity, didn’t quite cut it. Colours were somewhat too sharp, to put it lightly.

Accident in Kinrara
Posted: 4th November 2007 by Jacky Yong in Cars, Silly meTags: accident, Goodyear Ducaro GA, Iswara, Kinrara
I was originally going to blog about my newly changed car tyres. A pair of Goodyear Ducaro GA tyres. But I ended up blogging about how the newly changed Goodyear screwed me up!
First things first. I changed the front two tyres of my trusty old Iswara. The old Michelin tyres are worn out, so I thought of changing them. I went all the way to Pandan Indah, because that was where I bought the cheap Michelin tyres last time. They were good tyres, and I thought I wanted to go back there to get a good deal. And it was a big mistake going back there, as I shall soon find out.

Goodyear Ducaro
This is really bad. My first biggest lost since I converted over to Ubuntu. I have mistakenly formatted a drive that contains some of my biggest collections of photos amassed over the duration of a year! ARRRGGGHHHHHHH!!!! Words cannot even begin to define what I am feeling right now. My face is now stoned, expressionless, speechless. There, alone in the November night, I stared at the computer screen, that once contained my memories. Among the losses are my pictures taken during the Chinese New Year celebration this year in Sagil, along with the family trip to Lumut, Perak. That trip was Yan Yan’s first trip to a place so far away from home. She will live without that memory, not even captured on digital film, all because of ol’ daddy’s carelessness!! ARRRRRRRGGGHHHHH!!!!!!! I can only hit my stupid head against the keyboard!
What has the world come to? Has creativity come to its all time low? Has the big shots of big companies ran out of budget for their image consultant? Or has the world has just gone cuckoo?
I’m taking about the really uncreative names that has cropped up in commercial businesses around the Klang Valley lately. Heard of The Laundry, a very “happening” pub in the Sunway Damansara area? The Apartment (which is actually a restaurant)? Let’s not forget the king of all stupid names, The Curve. There is also a pub conveniently called The Pub located in Hotel Shangri-la.
What will they come up with next? The Hotel? The Restaurant? The Shirt? While the trend continues, why not go for “The Bitches”, “The Assholes”, “The Jerkheads With Monkey Brains”. Duuhhh……
Too much of penguin is bad for your (disk) health?
Posted: 25th October 2007 by Jacky Yong in Computers, Current AffairsI read with intrigue an article submitted by a friend:
Explanation of Ubuntu Hard Drive Wear and Tear
It says that from Feisty onwards, Ubuntu has been using the hard disk’s power management feature to spin down the hard drive, in an attempt to save some juice on your laptop battery. However the powering down of the hard disk is also contributing to hard disk’s wear and tear. I would say that this feature is not that useful in a desktop, since power is abundant. This is the suggested workaround:
hdparm -B 255 /dev/sda
I don’t know whether the author means for this to be included in the /etc/hdparm.conf file, or to be run in the terminal. Whichever it is, it’s worth a try. I have yet to try it.
Meanwhile, I went looking for some explanation on Google, and some say that this problem might be a bit over-rated:
Is it true that ubuntu can damage hard disks!
Thousands of webfarms are purring with Linux installed in them, why has nobody raised the question of hard disk crashing yet? This might be an isolated problem, but a problem for us Ubuntu users nonetheless. We’ll just have to wait and see.
As for me, I’m getting that external hard disk casing soon. To backup all my stuffs, just in case!
With the demise of the last remaining computer in my house from using Windows as the main OS, I am now a proud owner of two happy Ubuntu machines! Couldn’t be more happier!
It started a bit scary at first, my main hard disk containing all my photos, suddenly couldn’t be mounted! It complained that my previous version of Windows did not shut down properly, and thus need to be forced mounted, or something like that. A bit of research revealed a tool aptly called NTFSFix. Run it once, restart your machine and may all your worries be gone!

Solution : Why doesn’t my theme or module show?
Posted: 21st October 2007 by Jacky Yong in ComputersArrgghhh!! I have answered my own questions again! Earlier today I have decided that Drupal 5.3 is not compatible with the themes that I have wanted. Read link here
I couldn’t be more wrong!
After much reading, the reading was actually related to the permission of my folders. All I had to to is to reassign them back to, well, whatever permission that works for the other themes. This works for both modules and themes.

Solution : Why my content does not display normally
Posted: 21st October 2007 by Jacky Yong in ComputersRemember the problem with my Drupal when I wanted to create a new content? Well, the problem not only affects content creation, it affects anything that is related to blocks that expands and contracts on clicking, which includes the pathauto page configuration.

What’s happening? Why isn’t my themes in Drupal showing anything at all? I have just installed Drupal 5.3 into my host server, and everything looks good to go! I’m excited to get my new site up and running. So installed the standard stuffs like PathAuto, Token and Update_Status. Then downloaded some themes that I like, and the old Ubiquity Theme that I used before the upgrade. That’s funny, I can’t see them in the Administer — Themes link. Hmmm…. perhaps I should try logging out and re-login again. Tried that. No deal. I went away for a few hours, and logged back in at night. No luck! What is happening? Old Google to the rescue:
The answer: the themes are not compatible with Drupal 5.3 yet! Alamak, this is bad news indeed! That means one thing; I am stuck with this Garland theme! YUCK! Not very nice, I know. But what to do? *sigh…*
FUN. That’s what I would describe it as. Perhaps due to the fact that I have not seen Pui Kuan (Jess) for such a long time already. 2 years maybe? Maybe more. She hasn’t changed a bit, still the happy cute girl that I used to know while working in Infortech many years ago.
