Had the opportunity to work on a couple who are getting married this weekend in Pantai Remis. I did their wedding dinner in Equitorial Hotel, KL last week, which was intended for the couple’s friends who are not able to travel all the way to Pantai Remis to attend that wedding.

The bane of using Micro$oft, you get all kinds of worms and trojans. Even if you are an IT geek, you’re not invulnerable from these little pest. I had just opens the page, and it auto downloads. Before I have any say in whether or not to scan it, Trend Micro has “intelligently” verified that it is a trojan. Before I know it, BAM! Bugs crawling all over my laptop screen, literally!

Oh by the way, do not press “YES” at the screen above. Press it and you will open more trojans into your machine!

No XMMS for me!

I give up. I can’t seem to find back XMMS in Hardy. But this is Linux world, everything is available, you just have to look harder. I bumped into Audacious, and it looks like a good XMMS replacement. Contrary to what everybody thinks, XMMS2 is NOT a replacement for XMMS. It’s actually a command line MP3 player, with no GUI! (Yeah, Linux is that eccentric, you do not need to click a mouse to play music, you type commands!)

So yeah, Audacious it is. The interface looks clean and smooth, it auto updates itself (because it’s in the repositories) and most importantly, it plays my music with clicks instead of types!

What should I do with a .sh file?

Posted: 14th May 2008 by Jacky Yong in Computers

Sometimes somewhere, you encounter some really stupid sites that are trying to be helpful, but they expected you to know how or what to do with the file. Happens quite often in the world of Linux. I was trying to get myself the XMMS from the apt-get, but unfortunately I couldn’t find it. The error came out something like this:

E: Package xmms has no installation candidate

Singaporeans thrives underground!

Posted: 9th May 2008 by Jacky Yong in Silly me

They do! The very vein that runs through Singapore seems to be beneath the soil. Can’t blame me for thinking like that. The open air seems so bare of life when I was looking for dinner near my hotel on Wednesday. Then I went to the MRT in Tanjung Pagar, and boy was I surprised! It was as if the Singaporeans dug a huge nuclear bunker underground! They live, eat, shop and traverse 10 metres under. There was eateries everywhere, shoe shops, fashion accessories, groceries, you name it. No wonder I can’t find proper dinner on Wednesday and yesterday; they were all located down under, where the traffic of people are. The huge network of their MRT sprawled across most of the areas in the southern and central region. Proper and efficient use of their precious land, I’d say. Go to Orchard and the complex labyrinth of passages and walkways underground will overwhelm a tourist, surely. Read the rest of this entry »

Singapore again

Posted: 8th May 2008 by Jacky Yong in Current Affairs

I’m writing this from Singapore again. Been here since yesterday, and flying back to KL tomorrow. This time is a bit different. I’m staying in M Hotel instead of the usual Holiday Inn or York Hotel. Fully booked, so I’ve heard. M Hotel is way off from Orchard Road. It’s in Cecil Street, right smack in the middle of the financial district of Singapore. I came here with Worachart, the CSC vendor from Thailand. Read the rest of this entry »

Yong Hui Yan

Posted: 4th May 2008 by Jacky Yong in Silly me

Oh by the way, the name is Yong Hui Yan, 杨恺恩, cantonese pinyin.

We celebrated Hui Yan’s full moon yesterday with minimal fanfare. Yesterday also marked the last day that they confinement lady will be with us. And the start of nightmares for us. Imagine waking up to two crying babies in the middle of the night! We’ll have to do it all over again, the sleepless nights, the walking zombies while heating up the baby’s milk, the washing of tonnes of clothings. The smaller baby is more messier than the bigger one, although by not a lot! Smaller babies also require more care when feeding. With Yan Yan, I just throw the bottle at her and she suck down the bottle herself. With Hui Yan, we will have to heat up the milk just to the right temperature, slowly adjust the flow of the milk to her mouth, and burp her if she gets too full. No more movie nights for us for another year it seems!

Does she look like her elder sister Yan Yan? I can’t tell, but my relatives says she looks more like mommy. Compare her pictures with Yan Yan. But one thing is certain, she certainly does behave more girlish than Yan Yan is, for now at least. She has this little set of long fingers, and long body and legs.

Page Blank after upgraded to WordPress 2.5.1

Posted: 3rd May 2008 by Jacky Yong in Computers

Sometimes it’s not that good to have too much updates so often. Every now and then I will have to be bugged by the message “Your WordPress is out of date. Please update to version xxx”. To be honest, I feel harassed. It seem that it wasn’t that long ago that I upgraded to version 2.5, now they have 2.5.1! Aiyo, one of these days I’m gonna have to install one of those auto-upgrade features. Read the rest of this entry »

What’s the latest in the OS war?

Posted: 3rd May 2008 by Jacky Yong in Computers

Ubuntu’s latest incarnation just came out. Just like clock-work, it never fails to meet its release target date. The latest to come out of Canonical is version 8.04, exactly on 24th April 2008 just as planned. The main feature this time around is the LTS badge. LTS means Long Term Support, which means that the desktop version will be supported for 3 years, while the server version up to 5 years. Read the rest of this entry »

10 Dalil Kenapa Najib Tidak Boleh Jadi PM

Posted: 2nd May 2008 by Jacky Yong in Current Affairs

For once I am fully agreeable to Dr M when he said that Najib should not be PM. BN has lost significantly, and they have used this reason to hold the current PM Abdullah Badawi responsible and force him to step down. Not a good move my friends. For one thing, Badawi is innocent in the 2008 General Election. He is only taking helm from the shit that Dr M has left for him back in 2003. You are only seeing the mess because Badawi has the guts to reveal them for us all to see. Read the rest of this entry »
